Plan for these upcoming ways to dispose of yard waste

SEDONA, Ariz. – While city crews are out picking up down tree limbs and plants that were growing in the city’s right-of-way after a big snow storm last week, the city also invites residents to participate in the upcoming annual Curbside Yard Waste Collection Event this April and part of May. However, because there was so much debris from this last storm on private property and because there are limits in the amount of waste allowed to be collected in the Curbside Yard Waste Collection Event, residents may also bring yard waste to the city’s material yard south of the Sedona Wetlands Preserve at 7700 W. 89A between 8 and 11 am on Thursdays in March before the event.
For the Curbside Yard Waste Collection Event, find your neighborhood’s pick-up day here: www.sedonaaz.gov/curbside and place material curbside by 4 p.m. the day prior to pick-up.
Accepted for collection:
- Brush
- Tree limbs and trunks: Limbs eight inches or less and eight feet long or less
- Shrub trimmings
- Bagged leaves and pine needles. No more than 10 bags
- Total amount of debris accepted cannot exceed five yards or a pile no larger than 10 feet long, 4 feet wide and 3 feet tall
Not accepted:
- Cactus trimmings
- Appliances
- Hazardous materials
- Garbage
- Mattresses
- Other household waste
Creating a defensible space within 30 feet of your home can greatly reduce the risk of a wildfire. Tall, dry grasses provide a path for fire, so by removing dry grasses, leaves, excess vegetation and pine needles from your roof and gutters, you reduce fire risk. Prune tree limbs so the lowest limb is between six to 10 feet from the ground.
The event is also an opportunity to remove debris in drainage areas prior to monsoon season. Shrubs, loose trimmings, and yard waste in drainage ditches can block storm water flow, increasing the risk of flooding.
