Yavapai College’s increase property taxes

Posted on May 9, 2023February 6, 2025 by Donna Joy

Many read the notice posted on Facebook “Yavapai College proposes 5% tax increase” from The Verde Valley Independent article here. We all appreciate the local papers placing notices like this on Facebook. If they didn’t we wouldn’t be informed. According to the Verde Valley Independant “The Yavapai Community College District is proposing an increase in primary property taxes of $2,553,300 or 5%.”

UPDATE May 16: Yavapai College district proposed 5% tax increase on district property taxes was voted in favor of by the Yavapai College district.

MEETING

Tuesday, May 16, at 1 p.m. at the Yavapai College Prescott Campus – Community Room 19-147, 1100 E. Sheldon Street, Prescott

With so many changes in our world, lack of housing, affordable housing, homelessness, soaring food costs, and low-paying jobs in the Verde Valley is now the right time to increase a property tax rate?
Sedona population has declined and short-term rental properties have increased.
Has the College looked for other options, ways to save money, effectiveness or efficiency of programs other solutions?

Understanding the process and learning who does what is always good to know.
While we are all busy in our lives, work, and children are our top priorities. Time slips away slowing it down to think it through isn’t always available. This is the purpose of this post.

Can we write to have a voice? or do we have to be present on May 16, at 1 p.m. at the Yavapai College Prescott Campus – Community Room 19-147, 1100 E. Sheldon Street, Prescott

Those of us that have reviewed the property tax bills see that Yavapai College takes a big hit. The higher the property taxes are the higher our costs are. While the property owner pays those taxes it is passed down to renters if that property is rented.

What does this mean and how do residents have a voice?

Learning more is always helpful. So I went to https://www.yc.edu/v6/district-governing-board/index.html to learn more about the governing board.

From Yavapai College website

“How We Work For You

The Board’s role is to act as a link between the taxpayers and management, directing and regulating the organization on the taxpayers’ behalf. While Board members are elected by the voters of Yavapai County, they make decisions in the best interest of the taxpayers as a whole.”

District Board Members: https://www.yc.edu/v6/district-governing-board/members.html

“Yavapai College District Governing Board members are community individuals who live within Yavapai County. Board members are elected officials for six-year terms representing five districts within the County.”
