About Donna Joy

Donna Joy is a continuous entrepreneur, who started in the Biotech, and medical field. She was blessed to be part of a team that developed life-saving biological products for implantation in Switzerland. Built the company from the ground level and was responsible for all aspects of the production of biological products in the class 100 cleanroom. Donna also had a baby boy while living in Switzerland which was an experience. Having a baby abroad in a second language was a learning experience.

Donna moved back to the US and worked on another startup, Ambulatory Infusion Devices Medical Devices with her three year old son. As Production Manager, she was responsible for all aspects of the production line including the processes, and procedures, and set up the clean room production of ambulatory infusion devices. Both companies still exist to this day. Donna was also involved in offshore manufacturing, auditing, implementation, and education of TQM programs.

She moved to Sedona wanting to grow her family. They looked at existing businesses to buy. Sedona being a rural resort town led Donna and her husband, Dana into the food business. While Dana had restaurant experience Donna didn’t. Donna used her curiosity to learn, research and study the industry. They purchased a small yogurt, ice-cream sandwich shop expanding it into a bakery cafe specialty coffee with retail items. Chill Out Cafe became Sedona’s most popular spot. Customers lined up and out the door!

What she didn’t know she learned. It didn’t take long for other restaurants and boutique hotels to come to Dana & Donna to purchase her award-winning pastries and desserts. Donna developed methods to increase productivity and the Varneys were then wholesaling to Sedona’s top restaurants. In this original location Donna self-taught herself to make chocolates. Learning to temper and mold chocolates. They also sold Donna’s made in Sedona potholders, placemats, handbags and more.

They opened a second location with a large commercial oven and kitchen. Brides started coming to Donna to create their wedding cakes. Donna used the old methods of books and research to create an award-winning cake artistry.

From the second they built a custom commercial bakery in a rented location. Donna love for science, food, and arts led her into Culinary Arts and food processing of Donna Joys’® proprietary formulas in grab-and-go, take-and-bake, and Chef prepared food mixes for home consumption. When it became time for Dana to retire, they built a standalone commercial kitchen on their property where Donna could focus on wedding -event cakes desserts and her food processing of Donna Joys’® proprietary formulas in grab-and-go, take-and-bake, and Chef prepared food mixes for home consumption.

Sedona Sweet Arts

Donna has been awarded Trail Blazing awards, was selected featured in People Magazine for her culinary art as “Arizona’s Best Wedding Cake”, ESPN Best grooms’ cake, and more. Her work has been seen in movies and featured in national magazines throughout the years.

Donna’s D. Joy Food Services obtained an FDA license for food processing and shipped Donna Joy’s® products all over the world.

While in Sedona Donna learned self-taught the Culinary Arts, formulas, food packaging. Developed proprietary formulas and created Donna Joy’s® a registered trade name.

Business Associations Sedona Bridal Fair

Donna has volunteered and served on serval business boards and non-profit Boards throughout the years. She founded the Sedona Bridal Fair and volunteered it to the Sedona wedding professionals. Sedona Bridal Fair was organized to market Sedona, showcasing the Sedona wedding professionals. The Sedona Bridal Fair operated as a non-profit. Brought over a thousand couples to Sedona at the signature events for 8 years.

Donna Joy Varney is primarily retired while she continues to take on projects and is a community volunteer. DonnaJoy.com will continue to share her research, recipes, and culinary art while she shares her other work.
